The design consistently follows the principle of combining beauty and function: the rim of each espresso cup fits precisely into the recess of the saucer. The original design was created in connection with a commission for the former Halle–Leipzig airline. Marguerite Friedlaender-Wildenhain developed the so-called “Hermes Service” for use in the Schkeuditz airport restaurant. The ring-shaped mocha cup, which later became known as the “airplane cup,” initially remained a design study and was not made available for general sale at the time.
To mark its 260th anniversary, KPM Berlin revived this rare design. The re-edition preserves the understated form, the precise function, and the distinctive character of the historic original. As a result, the Duo Set appeals not only to coffee lovers but also to collectors and fans of classic Bauhaus design.
