Porcelain from the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin

The ice cooler is made of double-fired porcelain. Before the second firing, the manufactory dips each piece into the glaze bath. The wafer-thin, transparent glaze gives the porcelain its translucent appearance. Complete, the KPM Kurland ice cooler weighs 1.83 kg, and according to the manufacturer the base holds 3,500 ml.

An ice cooler from the Neoclassical era

In the Neoclassical period, the ice cooler was used to chill caviar. At that time it was also common to chill the glasses rather than the wine. The form has not changed since 1790, and its purpose has remained the same: at the table, the ice cooler keeps cool whatever is meant to stay cool.

As part of the Kurland service, it can be combined with the rest of KPM's Kurland porcelain. At 27.5 cm high and 19 cm wide, it takes its place on the table without dominating it.
