Kvadrat Diade is an upholstery fabric designed by the artist Kapwani Kiwanga for the Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat. Woven from 100% recycled polyester made from so-called ocean-bound plastic, Kvadrat Diade shows two different patterns depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

Kvadrat Diade: a twill weave with two faces
The name says it all. "Diade" is an Italian word for something that consists of two parts. Kapwani Kiwanga took her inspiration from the iridescence of colours in nature, which appears or disappears depending on the angle of view. Kvadrat realises this idea with a deconstructed twill weave: a diagonal line in the warp meets a straight line in a different colour in the weft. The result is a prismatic effect that gives depth even to the colourway with a black warp and black weft.
Colours and effect in the room
Fifteen of the sixteen colourways each combine two shades. The vibrant group of sky blue, sunshine yellow, airy green and pale orange recalls the movement of bird feathers. The neutral group draws on earthy, muted tones of wood, stone and off-white. The surface looks rich and matt; it does not shine, but changes with the light and the position of the viewer.
Use in the office and at home
Kvadrat Diade is designed as an upholstery fabric for residential and commercial spaces and is particularly well suited to offices. With 75,000 Martindale rubs and high lightfastness, the fabric withstands daily use on chairs, sofas and benches. According to the information provided at launch, the recycled yarn matches the performance of new polyester, and the finished textile can in turn be recycled. Kvadrat presented Diade in April 2025 at the Salone del Mobile in Milan; at the Dezeen Awards 2025, the fabric was longlisted.
